After winning both the singles and doubles title at Citi Open, Nick Kyrgios has gone on to defeat world no.1 Daniil Medvedev in the Canadian Open
Nick Kyrgios claimed the biggest scalp of his red-hot winning streak Wednesday when he upset World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a heavyweight National Bank Open second-round clash in Montreal. After backing up his run to his maiden Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in June with his seventh ATP Tour title in Washington last week, Kyrgios has now won 14 of his past 15 matches. The win against Medvedev has seen the Australian rise to No. 31 in the ATP Rankings.
Kyrgios has plenty to play for this week in Montreal. Should he claim his maiden Masters 1000 title in Canada, the 27-year-old has a chance of jumping as high as No. 15 in the ATP Rankings. Two back-to-back titles will certainly be a major confidence booster for Kyrgios going into the US Open later this month. Kyrgios is scheduled to take on fellow Australian Alex de Minaur in the Round of 16 tomorrow.
Consistent performances over the past few months have led to positive results for Kyrgios. Hence, ahead of big events in Montreal and Cincinnati, it means Kyrgios is closing in on an all-important seeding for the US Open starting on 29 August in New York. It will certainly be a boost for the Australian in the singles draw but is it enough for Kyrgios to win the Grand Slam?
With Djokovic out of the U.S. Open due to his vaccination status and Rafael Nadal’s status in question after he pulled out of Montreal due to an abdominal injury, the Open could be lacking in some major star power on the men’s side. World No. 2 Alexander Zverev is also sidelined after surgery.
Defending champion Daniil Medvedev figures to be the favorite going in, with a slew of young stars like No. 4 Carlos Alcaraz, No. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime, and No. 12 Jannik Sinner among those chasing their first major title. But the way Kyrgios has played in recent weeks, he should certainly be considered among the favorites.
