Carlos Alcaraz defeated 12th seed Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-3 to set up a semi-final clash against Rafael Nadal
Carlos Alcaraz has set up a dream clash against his idol Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters. The 18-year old is in incredible form this year and has a win-loss record of 12-1 going into this clash. On the other hand, Nadal has made his best-ever start to a season with a win-loss record of 18-0 in 2022. However, if we just put the statistics aside, this match is a clash between the Champion and the Challenger – a prodigy taking on his idol.
Alcaraz spoke after the match on the prospect of facing his idol. “It’s tough to play against him but he will enjoy. It’s not everyday you play against your idol. I’m gonna be happy even if I lose but the focus is to play my best and take my chances”, said the teenager.
Nadal has won all three of his previous tournaments so far this year and looks in ominous touch. He is coming off an intense three-set thriller against Nick Kyrgios and will be facing an energetic and athletic teenager will definitely be a tricky prospect. Alcaraz meanwhile cruised past an in-form Cameron Norrie in straight sets – a match which everyone expected would be close.
Carlos Alcaraz is often compared to his idol Rafael Nadal. Left-handed, Spanish, strong on clay surfaces – too much in common isn’t it? Well, there is definitely something more to it. The potential, the talent and the precise execution, Alcaraz has it in abundance.
When you watch Alcaraz play, you can definitely relate him to Nadal in the early stages of his career. Alcaraz has been considered the next big thing in tennis for quite sometime now. Is it finally time for Alcaraz to put his name for reckoning along with the big boys?
This clash could well be a teaser to what’s in store for us at the next Grand Slam – the Roland Garros. Both players are very strong on clay surfaces and the French Open is a tournament both players will be desperate to win.
Alcaraz won the Rio Open last week. The tournament was played on a clay surface, a good warm-up event leading to the Roland Garos which is played on clay surface. Alcaraz became the youngest ever ATP 500 champion after defeating Diego Schwartzmann 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
Alcaraz however would need to be careful about his fitness leading to the second Grand Slam of the year. The Spaniard withdrew from the next event, the Acapulco Open in Mexico owing to a niggle he suffered post the Rio Open. With a packed schedule, he would look to ensure he stays fit and on top of his game going into the French Open.
