Ruud defeated 2nd seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open 2022
Casper Ruud put on a stellar show at the Miami Masters to seal his first-ever victory against Alexander Zverev. The Norwegian thanked his efficient serving for the victory. “I can thank my serving for the win today”, Ruud said after the match. The 6th seed is now scheduled to face unseeded Argentine, Francisco Cerundolo in the semi-finals of the Miami Open.
Zverev and Ruud have faced each on the ATP tour three times in the past before this encounter Zverev has won on all three occasions including a Walkover that he received at the 2021 Acapulco Open. However, Ruud was focused on turning things around this time out and he did it in some style!
Speaking after the match, Ruud said, “In my game, I need to make a lot of returns. I want to play the point out. Today, he (Zverev) was doing a couple more mistakes I feel. I was also returning a little bit better, a little bit deeper and make him play a little bit further behind in the court.”
Can Casper Ruud go all the way and clinch the title?
Casper Ruud has been thoroughly impressed at the Miami Open. The Norwegian is didn’t drop a single set in this event till the match against Zverev and defeated three seeded players in his journey so far. Ruud defeated 10th seeded Cameron Norrie convincingly in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to set up a clash against Zverev which he has now gone on to win comprehensively.
The 23-year old will fancy his chances against the unseeded Cerundolo but will be wary of the Argentine who is capable of causing an upset anytime.
Casper Ruud will be going into the semi-final looking to make his first-ever final in an ATP-1000 event. Ruud has won 7 ATP-career titles to date and is presently ranked No. 8 in the world.
The youngster is capable of beating anyone on his day. However, it will be an uphill task in the final if he manages to win against Cerundolo and go through. Ruud could potentially world no. 2 Daniil Medvedev or Carlos Alcaraz in the final both of whom are in sublime touch. Does Ruud have what it takes to get past them? We will soon have all the answers.
