Former world No. 2 Casper Ruud had a spectacular season in 2022 and has now won the Aftenposten gold medal.
The Aftenposten gold medal is one of the most prestigious sporting honors in Norway and is conferred to an athlete who performs exceptionally well during the course of the year. Some of the greatest sportspersons in the country have been honored with the gold medal in previous years.
This year, Casper Ruud impressed one and all with his exploits on the tennis court. He became the first tennis player to win the Aftenposten gold medal in the 89-year-old history of the award. The fact that Ruud won the award in the year of the Winter Olympics makes it even more commendable as Norway won the most gold medals in the competition and ended on the top of the list.
Ruud will be seen in action at the inaugural edition of the United Cup. The tournament is replacing the ATP Cup and it will begin on December 29. The matches will be played on the hard courts and will have 18 teams competing for the title.
When did Casper Ruud win his first ATP Tour title?
The 24-year-old Casper Ruud has won 9 titles so far in his career, after turning pro in 2015.
Casper Ruud had to wait for five years before winning his first ATP Tour title. At the 2020 Argentina Open in February, Ruud got the better of Pedro Sousa in the final to win the title.
By virtue of this triumph, Ruud became the first tennis player from Norway to win an ATP tour-level title. Interestingly, Ruud surpassed his father Christian Ruud’s ranking of No. 39 with that result and became the highest-ranked Norwegian player in ATP history with a ranking of No. 34 the following week on 17 February 2020.
