Linda Fruhvirtova picked up her first WTA tour win at the MUSC Health Women’s Open
The world is talking about rising Czech tennis star Linda Fruhvirtova. The 15-year-old picked up her first win on the WTA tour by defeating Alize Cornet.
Fruhvirtova won the first set 6-2 but lost the second one in a tie break. However, there was some luck on her side as she got the win after her rival retired due to an injury.
Fruhvirtova did have a match point in the second set and was tied at 4-4 in the decider. Nevertheless, this was a pretty big win for the youngster.
The 15-year-old hasn’t featured in the Grand Slams yet, but she has plans to play in several of the junior competitions as she continues her growth.
A lot of praise has come the Czech’s way with 18-time Grand Slam champion Chris Evert also sharing some information:
“She practiced at my Academy for a few weeks in January and was very impressive, playing sets with WTA pros and competing with them showing confidence and skill…She’s got it….”
Linda Fruhvirtova looking to make another big splash
The 15-year-old is currently starring in the MUSC Health Women’s Open and is also participating in the doubles competition.
However, she has a tough match against Emma Navarro in her next outing. Fruhvirtova is currently at her best ranking of 449 and that will only increase with more matches under her belt.
While she isn’t playing in the proper Majors, her plan to feature in the junior versions makes sense. Fruhvirtova claimed that playing in these junior tournaments as it gives her the experience of what to expect from them (h/t WTA):
“Playing the junior Grand Slams is nice, too. To handle the pressure, you know, `I should win this match.’ You get to know the atmosphere for the future.”
There are several rising talents on the WTA tour but Fruhvirtova certainly seems to be one of the best of the lot. She still needs a lot of big match experience but time is certainly on the side of the 15-year-old.
