Tennis News: The French Open 2022 finalists Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff have a combined age lower than the 3-time champion, Serena Williams
Iga Swiatek (21) and Coco Gauff (18) are set to take each other in the women’s singles final of the prestigious Roland Garros. Interestingly, their combined age of 39 years is less than Serena Williams (40) – who is yet to retire from the sport. Serena has dominated the women’s circuit for more than a decade but it seems that the baton has finally been passed over to the younger generation.
Serena Williams is presently on an indefinite break from the WTA tour. The 23-time Grand Slam champion in women’s singles and is regarded as one of the greatest ever tennis players. She emerged into the professional circuit in 1995, at the tender age of 15 years. Serena has won 73 WTA titles in her career with an overall win percentage of 84.9 %.
Swiatek and Gauff will be facing each other in the final at Philippe-Chatrier on Saturday evening. They have met each other two times before on the WTA tour. On both occasions, the Polish ace came out on top and leads 2-0 head to head. Their last meeting came three months back at the Miami Open, which Swiatek won comfortably in straight sets and will go into the match as the outright favorite.
Iga Swiatek has been on a dream run in 2022. With her 34th straight win coming in the semi-finals of the Roland Garros, the world No. 1 has moved within one win of the longest streak of wins (35) held by Venus Williams. Serena Williams is joint second on the list along with Swiatek on 34 wins.
Since a run to the Australian Open semi-finals in January, Swiatek has completely dominated the women’s game and won her past five tournaments – Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, and the Rome Masters. The Polish star is in red hot form and the current World No.1. The top seed certainly looks like breaking Serena’s record at the Roland Garros.
