Novak Djokovic tried to play some mind games with Dan Evans but it didn’t work
Dan Evans was on form as he produced a huge shock at the 2021 Monte Carlo Masters.
The British No.1 was up against the top seed in Novak Djokovic. However, Evans produced the performance of his career as he knocked out the Serbian.
Evans first raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set before surviving a comeback from Djokovic. The Australian Open champion made it 4-4 but Evans fought back and won the set 6-4.
Djokovic and Evans then fought in the second set real hard but it was Evans who got the first win over a top five opponent.
This was also his first win on clay on tour level, and he seemed charged up throughout the clash. Evans then spoke after the match and brought up some delaying tactics from Djokovic that obviously backfired:
“He kept me waiting at the start of the match in the changing room. It was a little annoying. That got me a little extra fired up.”
Djokovic came into the Monte Carlo Masters undefeated in 2021. He won 10 games on the spin and is also the Australian Open champion.
However, Evans was great throughout the match and Djokovic’s delaying tactics could have lit a fire under the British star.
Evans might not have won a Grand Slam so far but this win will go down as one of his greatest ever. The 30-year-old is a Davis Cup winner and it will be interesting to see how the rest of his 2021 campaign goes.
Roland Garros is a few weeks away and Djokovic would be fired up for that tournament after this shock loss to Evans.
