Daniil Medvedev can become the first man outside the Big 4 to top ATP Rankings soon

Daniil Medvedev will play the Mexican Open with the World No.1 spot at stake

Daniil Medvedev is on the verge of creating a number of records. He could potentially dethrone Novak Djokovic this week itself. Medvedev will take the court at Mexican Open knowing the odds are in his favour.

The 26-year old could become the third Russian man to accomplish this feat joining Yevgeny Kafelnikov (1999) and Marat Safin (2000-01). He could also join Andy Murray as the only first time World No.1s since Djokovic first reached the top spot in 2011.

Medvedev will be taking on Frenchman Benoit Paire in his first-round match. He could potentially face World no.3 German Alexander Zverev or World No. 4 Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. The path isn’t easy but given the form Medvedev is in, fans can really expect something big from the Russian.

The added motivation of having the No.1 spot within a touching distance does definitely help. However, the pressure is almost similar if not more. A slip in his performance could take away this golden opportunity from him for a number of months to come.

Scenarios for Daniil Medvedev to claim the No.1 spot next week

– If Djokovic loses R1 or R2 in Dubai C’ship, Medvedev is the new #1-

– If Djokovic loses in QF, Medvedev needs to reach R2-
