Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has called for peace following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Daniil Medvedev, the newly crowned World No. 1 has opened up on the global crisis. Medvedev became the World No. 1 the very same day his country officially invaded Ukraine.
Speaking on the issue, the Russian said, “We play in so many different countries, it’s not easy keep up with everything that’s happening. But in this instance, it’s clear – tennis is not important.” Medvedev is scheduled to take on Rafael Nadal in the semi-final of the Mexican Open tomorrow.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict is a global crisis and fans were looking forward to hearing from the Russian tennis star. Medvedev won his Mexican Open quarter-final against Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan. After his match, Medvedev addressed the issue surrounding the conflict.
In his first public statement regarding the crisis, Medvedev said, “By being a tennis player, I want to promote peace all around the world. I’ve been in so many different countries as a junior and as a pro. It’s just not easy to hear all this news. I’m all for peace.”
Russian tennis player, Andrey Rublev paired up with Ukrainian Denys Molchanov to win the doubles title in Marseille last week. Referring to the pairing, Medvedev said, “This is amazing because I think people need to stay together and that’s the most important thing.” He further added, “At this moment, you understand that tennis is sometimes not that important.”
The pairing of Rublev and Molchanov has been a really positive example in these tough times. It shows to the world how sport can unite even in the worst of times. However, things haven’t been too smooth for Rublev. The Russian has received nasty comments online because of the situation in Ukraine. Speaking after his victory in the Dubai Tennis Championships quarter-finals, Rublev said,
“In these moments you realise that my match is not important. What’s happening around in the world is terrible.” “You realise how important it is to have peace in the world and to respect each other, no matter what, to be united. It’s about that. We should take care of our earth and of each other. This is the most important thing”, said the Russian.
Such approach from sportspersons definitely make us believe that peace will eventually prevail. Sports, like always will emerge as the flag-bearer of unity.
