Guido Pella supported Dominic Thiem and said that he would give money to the people in his city
Dominic Thiem found himself an ally in Guido Pella, who shared the same opinion regarding donations during coronavirus pandemic.
Thiem had courted controversy after commenting that struggling tennis players did not deserve to be given money.
Pella believes that the tennis players do not require any money but it should rather be given to people who need it the most.
World No. 35, Pella, was of the opinion that he would rather give money to the people in his city than other tennis players. “I believe that no tennis player is starving and at this very special and hard moment the world is living, I would prefer to allocate money or it helps people who are really dying and who have nothing to eat,” Pella said while on air during a radio program ‘Basta’ by Metro 95.1.
“Tennis always looks at those who are upstairs and it is a sad truth that I lived throughout my career. I prefer to give assistance to people from my city,” he continued.
Pella then added by stating an example to validate his claim. He suggested the case of American tennis star Jack Sock, who is ranked 384 in the world.
According to him, players like Sock would still receive aid when he had already earned millions over the years.
Pella also added that nobody enquired about his condition, whether he was living well or if he had a family just because he was ranked 35th in the world.
“The idea is great but they have to see who can put that help. As I am 35th in the world, nobody asked me if I am living well, if I support a family …,” he said.
Pella gave an explanation as to why he wasn’t in support of the idea of offering money to other tennis players.
Since he did not belong to the category of players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, who can afford to offer big donations, people did not know the economic reality that he was living in.
