Elina Svitolina crashed out of the ongoing Wimbledon 2021 following her defeat to Magda Linette
It has been a tough post-pandemic season for Elina Svitolina. The women’s world no.6 suffered a defeat in straight sets to number 44 ranked Magda Linette of Poland.
Svitolina who has a semi-finalist the last time she took part in the Wimbledon (2019), was left looking clueless against Linette who beat (completed match) a top-10 ranked opponent in her sixteenth attempt.
Linette will be taking on Paula Badosa of Spain in the 3rd round. Badosa is seeded number 30.
As for Svitolina, it would be back to the drawing board. At least she could find some solace in her home country progressing to the quarter-finals of the ongoing Euro 2020.
The Coronavirus hasn’t spared anyone. It has hampered the progress of several athletes who were doing extremely well prior to its arrival. And Elina Svitolina seems to have been caught in the post-pandemic crossfire.
Prior to the pandemic, Svitolina made it to Round 3 of the Australian Open 2020 – quite a decent outing. She was eliminated by eventual runner-up Gabriel Muguruza.
At the US Open 2019, she went up to the semi-finals and did the same at the 2019 Wimbledon as well. She was putting on some great performances.
However, post-pandemic she has just made it to one quarter-finals out of a possible 5.
Svitolina was beaten in the quarter-finals of the 2020 French Open and then, skipped the US Open.
At the 2021 Australian Open, Svitolina couldn’t go past the round of 16. Her performances deteriorated further at the French Open 2021. The Ukrainian was beaten in the third round.
And now, she hasn’t even gone past the second!
