The Belgian Elise Mertens reached the Round of 16 stage of Wimbledon 2022 after defeating the former champion, Angelique Kerber in round three.
Elise Mertens managed to frustrate the former world No.1 with her strong defensive game to eventually win 6-4, 7-5. Kerber committed 28 errors and the last one of the lot helped Mertens to register the sensational victory. After winning the match, Mertens fought back her tears as she progressed to the fourth round of the most prestigious tennis tournament for the second time in her career.
Mertens started her Wimbledon 2022 campaign with a 6-1 loss in the first set of her first-round match against Camila Osorio. However, the current world No. 1 in doubles fought back strongly to win the second set 6-2. She was leading the third set 4-2 when her opponent had to give a walkover due to an injury.
In round two, the 26-year-old saved two match points against Panna Udvardy to eventually win the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
Who will Elise Mertens face in the Round of 16?
Elise Mertens will have her task cut out as she clashes with the third seed Ons Jabeur in round four of Wimbledon 2022.
The Tunisian has been in terrific form in 2022. She has won the Madrid Open and the Berlin Open this year. Jabeur started her Wimbledon 2022 assignment with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mirjam Bjorklund. In the second round, she made light work of Katarzyna Kawa with a 6-4, 6-0 win. The domination continued in the third round as Jabeur defeated Diane Perry in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Jabeur is yet to drop a set in the competition. She will go into the fourth-round match against Mertens as the overwhelming favorite. However, the world No. 31 will take confidence from the fact that she won convincingly in her only encounter with Jabeur at the US Open tournament last year. If Mertens can play her A-game, she can give the world No. 2 a tough time.
