British players Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu suffered early exits from Wimbledon 2022 in men’s and women’s singles respectively
British hopes of winning silverware on home turf at Wimbledon 2022, has suffered a severe dent with the exit of Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu. Murray lost in the second round of men’s singles to American John Isner. Meanwhile, 10th seed Raducanu lost to unseeded Caroline Garcia in the second round of women’s singles.
Andy Murray’s impressive run so far in the grass-court season came to a halt in the second round of Wimbledon 2022. The 35-year-old won the third set after losing the first two, to keep hope alive, but Isner – who is known for his big serves – outperformed Murray winning 6-4, 7-6, 6-7,6-4.
British hopes were pinned heavily on teenager Emma Raducanu. The 10th seed was the favourite in her clash against France’s Caroline Garcia but the US Open champion had a disappointing outing. The 19-year-old lost in straight sets 3-6, 3-6 in the second round of the tournament.
Who are the British players remaining in the tournament?
Let us take a look at the notable British players who are still in with a chance to win some silverware on home turf.
1. Cameron Norrie – Norrie won a thriller against Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 in round two after seeing off his compatriot Pablo Andujar 6-0, 7-6, 6-3 in the opening round. The British ace is set to face America’s Steve Johnson in the third round.
Cameron Norrie’s development over the last 12 months has been remarkable. The British No.1 has surged up the world rankings, entering the top 10 for the first time in his career earlier this year. Norrie won his first Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells last year and backed it up by making his ATP Finals debut.
2. Heather Watson – Watson came from a set down against Tamara Korpatsch to prevail 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round. Fading light put the breaks on the former Wimbledon junior champion on Wednesday but she was on the brink of victory against Qiang Wang and will resume with a 7-5, 5-4 lead.
3. Harriet Dart – Dart beat Rebekah Masarova 6-1, 6-4 in a delayed first-round match. Jessica Pegula, the eighth seed, is her next opponent – the match set to be played later today.
Harriet Dart has suffered first-round exits at both the Australian and French Opens in 2022, but the 25-year-old found some good form at the Nottingham Open, securing wins over Donna Vekic and Camila Giorgi before losing in the quarter-finals to Alison Riske. If Dart can carry this form into Wimbledon, she could be a dangerous opponent.
