Emma Raducanu made the world stand up and take notice at the Flushing Meadows last year. She progressed through the qualifiers and eventually won the tournament without dropping a single set.
The overnight sensation has not been able to replicate that form in the following tournaments. However, there is no shortage of focus and effort on the part of the Bromley-based lady. The 19-year-old had a disappointing campaign at SW19 this year as she crashed out of the tournament in the second round after a defeat in straight sets against Caroline Garcia.
Tennis coach Aggelos Venizelos shared a few stories on his Instagram handle where Emma Raducanu was seen putting in the hard yards at the IMG Academy. She was seen practising her shots as well as serves and the talented youngster looked completely in the zone. The US Open begins on August 29.
John McEnroe generally minces no words while analyzing the sport. He has called out Emma Raducanu a number of times for her lackluster performances at the grass-court major.
In fact, McEnroe also had some good things to say about Raducanu in his recent interview with Tennis365. The 63-year-old said: “I hope to have the opportunity soon because she is obviously a breath of fresh air. She is a very sweet girl, a beautiful girl and plays great tennis. What’s not to like.”
McEnroe said it has been hard for him to watch Raducanu struggle. He also asserted the importance of having the right people around her.
“It has been hard to watch her struggling, but I don’t know if she needs time,” he explained. “She needs the right stability and people around her and I don’t know what’s going on there.
“No one wins a major if they are not a great player and hopefully she has belief, but a lot has changed for her since then. You don’t go through a tournament where you don’t lose a single set and beat some of the top female players and not be a great player.”
