This year’s Wimbledon saw some intriguing matches. We saw a number of upsets throughout the tournament as players who were not given a chance had put on some of the most mesmerizing performances.
ESPN’s viewership for the fortnight of the exclusive daily live marathon linear TV coverage of Wimbledon bettered last year’s number by 26 percent. An average of 647,000 viewers (P2+) enjoyed the riveting action lasting close to 150 hours.
In total, ESPN/ESPN2/ABC presented 157 hours from London if the six Breakfast at Wimbledon programs and encores of the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Championships on ABC are included.
In 2021, the final was played between Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini. The Serbian won the match in four sets. This year’s final between Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios bettered last year’s numbers by 22 percent. The average viewership was 2.2 million. The peak was at 3.3 million at noon ET as the veteran finished the match in the tiebreaker in the fourth set.
How did the women’s final fare this year compared to last year?
The final was contested between the world No. 2 Ons Jabeur and the exciting Elena Rybakina. Jabeur went into the match as the favorite but it was the Russian-born Rybakina who stole the show and came out victorious after dropping the first set.
The match was witnessed by an average of 1.2 million viewers. This was an improvement of 9 percent from last year’s final played between Ashleigh Barty and Karolina Pliskova. The Australian won the match in three sets.
So the finals of the most prestigious Grand Slam managed to attract more viewers on average compared to last year’s numbers.
Both championships were reaired later each day on ABC at 3 pm. Those broadcasts averaged 931,000 viewers, an increase of 13 percent.
