Fabio Fognini and Jenson Brooksby had a riveting encounter in the round of 32 of the 2023 ASB Classic on Monday.
Tennis fans waited patiently for the new season to begin and now they are being treated to one classic match after another. One such match came in the round of 32 of the ongoing ASB Classic where Italian veteran Fabio Fognini went down to America’s Jenson Brooksby in three sets.
After winning a hard-fought first set in the tiebreak, Fognini was completely outplayed by the youngster in the second set. At a crucial point in the third set with Fognini ahead at 2-0, Brooksby won a crucial break point thanks to a lucky net cord. After winning the point, Brooksby chose not to apologize for the stroke of luck. That point helped him crawl back into the third set. This irked Fognini and he had a word with the 22-year-old during the changeover.
Brooksby eventually won the match 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-3. During the on-court interview, Brooksby said that Fognini asked him to apologize but the former stated that he was taught a net cord had nothing to do with luck.
“It’s gonna happen in the heat of the battle. He (Fognini) said I should apologize for net cords, but I was taught that it’s not really luck-based,” Jenson Brooksby regarding the incident.

Fabio Fognini got into Jenson Brooksby’s ears right after the match ended. It wasn’t too clear what he said but as per an indistinct clip, it seemed that Fognini gave a mouthful to the youngster.
As per the clip, this is what Fognini seems to have said: “You are young, you are amazing, but you are so stupid.”
Brooksby moves into the round of 16 with the win. He will face third seed David Schwartzman up next. This also promises to be an intriguing watch. The match takes place on Wednesday. Let’s hope the match turns out to be as good or even better than the Fognini-Brooksby encounter.
