Carlos Alcaraz produced another fine display of endurance and determination as he outlasted America’s Frances Tiafoe in the US Open semifinal 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.
The talented Spaniard won a match in five sets for the third consecutive time after his win against Marin Cilic in the fourth round and Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals.
Carlos Alcaraz entered the match as the favorite but Frances Tiafoe must have been quietly confident after his performances in the tournament leading up to the match. The 24-year-old defeated the mighty Rafael Nadal and Andrey Rublev in the last couple of matches before the showdown with Alcaraz.
The World No. 4 negotiated Tiafoe’s serves better than others at this year’s US Open tournament. The home favorite did hit 15 aces but his win percentage on the first serve was 70 compared to Alcaraz’s 75. Against Nadal and Rublev, Tiafoe’s win percentage on the first serve was 76 and 88, respectively.
After letting the first set slip away by the barest of margins, the 19-year-old Alcaraz stormed back into the match with comprehensive wins in sets two and three. Tiafoe took the closely contested fourth set before Alcaraz showed his class once again in the decisive fifth set.
Carlos Alcaraz will take on Casper Ruud in the final of the US Open. The winner of the match will not only win his first Grand Slam title but also become the No. 1 ranked tennis player for the first time in his career.
