Jelena Ostapenko lost her first-round match against Zheng Qinwen at the US Open. The Chinese tennis pro won the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Tuesday.
The former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko lost to a spirited Zheng Qinwen on Tuesday. The 19-year-old hit as many as 20 aces en route to her first win on debut at Flushing Meadows. She had a win percentage of 70 on the first serve compared to 61 for the Latvian.
Ostapenko is the fifth seed out of the women’s draw after Simona Halep (7), Daria Kasatkina (10), Martina Trevisan (27), and Jil Teichmann (30). The upsets keep on coming at the final major tournament of the year.
This is Zheng’s second upset of the year at a major tournament. She defeated 2-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep in the French Open second round.
Zheng will take on Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in the second round. Potapova looked quite impressive as she defeated Claire Liu in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round. This will be the first meeting between Potapova and Zheng.
During the match, the veteran Ostapenko challenged a call from the umpire. When the replays surfaced, it showed the ball landing miles out of the line.
