We have seen across various sports that two players/teams playing against each other wear gear of different colors or designs so that officials and fans can easily tell them apart.
While the sport of tennis doesn’t cause too much of a problem if two players compete against each other wearing the same gear, it just doesn’t look apt. For example, in football, two teams must wear different colors so that the players, referees, and fans have no identification problems. In tennis, the problem isn’t too big but it just doesn’t look right when two players face each other with similar kits.
Well, it seems that Nike thinks otherwise as Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper were seen competing against each other wearing similar jerseys. They faced each other at the Basel Open on Monday. Both men wore identical jerseys, and that led to Nike receiving a lot of flak from tennis fans on social media.
The match was a riveting affair that saw the world No. 1 making a strong comeback after dropping the first set to eventually win the match 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 against the southpaw.
Fans hailed Alcaraz for the stellar comeback but the other talking point was the identical jerseys that the two players wore during the encounter. Few fans praised the design from Nike but felt that the two players shouldn’t have worn the same kit against each other.
Fans’ reactions
Let’s take a look at how fans reacted to both Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper wearing similar gear during their match in the round of 32 of the Basel Open.
