Top seed Daniil Medvedev lost to Nick Kyrgios 7-6, 4-6, 2-6 in the first round of Canadian Open
Nick Kyrgios was quick to take a stand for Daniil Medvedev on social media after a video surfaced on the internet where some fans can be seen referring to Medvedev as a ‘loser’, while the Russian was leaving the stadium. Kyrgios slammed the fans’ comments as “disgusting behavior” and referred to Medvedev as the best in the sport. Medvedev will be next seen in action at the Cincinnati Masters tomorrow.
Fresh off his 7-6, 4-6, 2-6 defeat to Kyrgios at the Canadian Open in Montreal, Medvedev was exiting the venue when several fans shouted the insult at him. The 26-year-old Russian was unimpressed by the comment, turning around to confront one of the louder fans and having an animated discussion while flanked by security guards. Footage shows Medvedev finally pulling away after almost one minute, telling the fan to ‘think’ while gesturing to his head.
Fans mostly praised Kyrgios for taking a stand for Medvedev while there were a few who termed Kyrgios as a ‘hypocrite’ because the Australian himself loses control of his behaviour very frequently.
“Totally agree Nick, and thank you for bringing awareness to this issue”, wrote a fan, praising Kyrgios.
“Bold of u to talk about showing respect tbh… reflect”, tweeted another fan, with a contrasting opinion.
“People that chant or call out negatively to the players are simply not “fans”. I cannot say what they actually are on social media. These tennis players are entertaining us by hiving it their all in extreme temperatures and this is how we show our appreciation? SMH”, wrote another fan.
Another fan tweeted, “That fan did not achieve anything in his life, that’s why he doesn’t understand loss”.
