The legendary Serena Williams is on the last lap of her illustrious career. Fans and celebrities had feared that the veteran might bow out of the US Open in the first round and it could end up being her last match. T
hat’s why they came to watch her match in large numbers. However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion knocked off Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic comprehensively.
Serena Williams defeated Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in a first-round match of the US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 40-year-old hit 9 aces compared to her opponent’s 6. She also had an impressive win percentage of 76 on the first serve.
Williams came into the tournament on the back of a disappointing Cincinnati Masters campaign where she was outplayed by 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu in straight sets in the first round.
This win will certainly give the former World No. 1 and her fans a huge boost of confidence as she prepares to take on World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round.
Another thing that delighted the fans was Williams putting off her retirement talks following the win. During a post-match interview, Williams said, “I’ve been pretty vague about it, right,” when asked about her retirement plans. “I’m going to stay vague because you never know.”
Twitter reactions to Serena Williams’ thumping first-round win
