The sixth seed – Emma Raducanu survived yet another wobble in the second set to defeat the experienced Yanina Wickmayer 6-3, 7-5.
Because of the win, Emma Raducanu progressed to the quarterfinals of a tournament for the third time this year. She made it to the last 8 at the Stuttgart Open and the Citi Open, where she lost to Iga Swiatek and Liumila Samsonova, respectively.
The former US Open champion crashed out of the US Open in the first round. At the Slovenia Open that followed, Raducanu showed signs of improvement during her run to the round of 16. Raducanu won both of her matches at the Korea Open in straight sets. There has been a pattern to her wins as she dominated the first set but failed to close out the match without a hiccup in the second set.
Against Moyuka Uchijima in the first round, Raducanu took a 5-0 lead in the second set before the Japanese youngster made a spirited comeback. Eventually, the British No. 1 won the match 6-2, 6-4. A similar story unfolded in the round of 16 against the Belgian veteran Wickmayer. The 19-year-old won the first set 6-3 and took a 4-1 lead in the second set. However, things got interesting from thereon as Wickmayer leveled things up at 5-5. Raducanu had to dig deep to win consecutive games and survive the scare. She will face Magda Linette in the quarter-finals.
