Popular French newspaper “L’Equipe” has ranked tennis players according to how disappointing their season in 2022 was and Jannik Sinner stands at the top.
Jannik Sinner is on top of a list of rankings where he would have actually preferred to be rather lower. The French newspaper “L’Equipe feels that the Italian youngster has been the biggest disappointment of the season.
Sinner, currently ranked 15th in the ATP rankings, managed to win just 1 tournament in 2022 at Umag. While that might not look very impressive, an in-depth analysis of his season will show that he hasn’t fared too badly. Winning titles is important but at the age of just 21, progress is key as well.
In the 63 singles matches that Sinner has played on the tour, he has won 47 and lost 16 with a win percentage of 74.60. He made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. At Wimbledon, he gave eventual champion Novak Djokovic a real scare. Sinner won the first two sets but the veteran bounced back strongly to win the match. Against Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open quarterfinals, Sinner played fantastic tennis and pushed the eventual champion to the limit. Injuries also played a part in Sinner’s season. He could have found more success if the string of injuries didn’t come his way.
In the 2021 season, Sinner won 1 ATP 500 event and 3 ATP 250 events while in 2022, he won only one ATP 250 title. From that perspective, Sinner’s season has certainly been disappointing.
Jannik Sinner will be hoping to turn things around next season and not be anywhere close to this list of L’Equipe. Let’s take a look at how fans reacted after the 21-year-old was placed on top of the list of disappointments of 2022.
