Nick Kyrgios advances to the quarterfinal of the US Open for the first time after a thumping win against World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev.

The Australian star won the match 7-6 (13-11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Kyrgios played an extremely attacking brand of tennis as the defending champion looked rattled at certain stages of the match. After narrowly losing the first set, the Russian tennis star came back strongly to win the second set.

However, it was all about Kyrgios in the next two sets as he fought fire with fire and eventually extinguished Medvedev’s hope for a repeat of last year’s performance.

Medvedev will lose his World No. 1 spot on the first Monday after the US Open ends. Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud, and Carlos Alcaraz are the contenders to become the new World No. 1.

After this win, the 27-year-old took his head-to-head lead to 4-1 against Medvedev. In the post-match press conference, Medvedev compared Kyrgios to legends like Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

I’m just glad that I am finally able to show New York my talent,” Kyrgios said. “I haven’t played great tennis [in the past] to be honest… it’s taken me 27 years.”

Kyrgios defeated Medvedev at the Canadian Open last month. That win must have given him a lot of confidence going into this match. The Wimbledon finalist hit a staggering 21 aces during the match.

Nick Kyrgios will be facing another Russian tennis star Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinal. Both players have one win each in their two previous meetings.
