Emma Raducanu combated sweltering heat to produce a fine display against Camila Osorio in a Round of 16 match of the Citi Open.
The Bromley-based tennis player is gearing up to defend her title at the upcoming US Open. She defeated Camila Rosario on Thursday after playing for close to three hours. Raducanu won a couple of tiebreakers to win the match in straight sets in muggy conditions.
By virtue of the win, Raducanu progressed to the quarter-final stage of the competition. This is only her second quarter-final appearance in a tournament in 2022. The first one came at Stuttgart, Germany, on red clay.
Emma Raducanu suffered blisters on her right hand and needed a medical timeout towards the fag end of the second set. Osoria also had a tough time dealing with adverse weather conditions.
A pretty monumental effort to really get through that,” Raducanu said. “I’m just really pleased and proud of how I dug in when it mattered.”
The 19-year-old will take on world No. 60 – Liudmila Samsonova in the quarter-final stage. Winning this tournament would hold Raducanu in good stead before the US Open gets underway on August 29.
The 23-year-old Russian tennis pro, Samsonova has been in decent form as she ousted Elise Mertens and Ajla Tomljanovic in the first couple of rounds to set up a date with Raducanu.
