The legendary Roger Federer announced his retirement from professional tennis earlier this year. In his last match, he teamed with Rafael Nadal in the Laver Cup to face the team of Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock.
Roger Federer is one of the greatest tennis players the sport has ever witnessed. He won as many as 103 titles in his career. The 20-time Grand Slam champion enthralled tennis fans for two and a half decades and inspired many young players with his exemplary skills and unmatched dedication to the game.
Federer won his 10th Basel Open title in front of his home fans in 2019. The Basel-born superstar entered double digits in a tournament for the second time in his career after defeating the Australian youngster Alex De Minaur in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. It was Federer’s fourth title of the season and the last in his glorious career.
He served as a ball boy in the tournament back in his younger days, and he ended up becoming the most successful player at the tournament. A fantastic story that will inspire any youngster aspiring to become a tennis player.
The competition was not held in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, top players like Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Alexander Bublik will look forward to winning the title. Veterans like Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray would look forward to rolling back the years and treating the fans with some vintage performances.
However, these fine players of the game will find it difficult to fill the gigantic shoes of Roger Federer. Fans got quite emotional as this is the last time Roger Federer’s name would be mentioned as the defending champion before and during a tournament.
