World No. 6 Maria Sakkari began her campaign in the 2023 Australian Open with a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 win against Yuan Yue on Monday – fans were in awe with her physique
The Greek star ended 2022 by losing to eventual champion Caroline Garcia in the semis of the WTA Finals. Maria Sakkari had a topsy-turvy campaign at the inaugural United Cup but he has begun the Australian Open on a fine note.
Last year at the Australian Open, Sakkari was ousted in the fourth round of the Australian Open by Jessica Pegula in straight sets. The 27-year-old will be hopeful of a better campaign this time.
Against Yue, Sakkari played some fantastic tennis and didn’t give her opponent any freebies. Sakkari converted five of her 13 break points and had a commendable win percentage of 87 on the first serve. Out of the 75 points that Sakkari won, 30 of them came from her serves. The sixth seed also won 45 receiving points while the Chinese youngster just managed to win 13.
Sakkari will now square off against Diana Shnaider in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday. Shnaider won three qualifying matches to reach the main draw and then defeated Kristina Kucova in the first round.
