The light at the end of the tunnel seems to be elusive for the 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu. She suffered yet another setback on her comeback trail as she lost in the second round of the Slovenia Open.
Emma Raducanu looked at ease during her first-round match against Dayana Yastremska. After winning the first set 6-2 and leading the second set 5-3, Raducanu saw her opponent retiring due to an injury. In the second round, the 19-year-old faced the German tennis pro – Anna-Lena Friedman.
Raducanu was the overwhelming favorite going into the match as her opponent wasn’t even in the top 200 and her performances this season hadn’t been something to write home about.
The Bromley-based Raducanu reportedly suffered a thigh injury during the first set. However, she was moving all right in the second set and even bageled her opponent. However, the experienced Friedsam managed to hold her nerves and pulled off a stunning upset win. The match ended with the scoreline 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 in favor of the German qualifier.
The topsy-turvy match was ultimately decided in 2 hours and 21 minutes and the win takes Friedsam to the quarterfinals where she will take on Diane Parry.
It’s back to the drawing board time for the top-seeded Raducanu. The youngster must be going through a lot with the string of disappointing results that have been haunting her for the past one year.
The die-hard fans of Emma Raducanu tried to stand beside her after the shocking loss. However, the critics didn’t spare her as the hurdles on the road to redemption are getting tougher for the British No. 1.
