Australian tennis pro – Alexei Popyrin is currently plying his trade in the ongoing Adelaide International 1. He has made it to the quarterfinals with some stunning performances.
It has been an eventful start to the new season for 23-year-old Alexei Popyrin. In his home country, the youngster has managed to overcome the odds and make it to the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International.
Popyrin played a couple of qualifying matches against Chinese players Zhang Zhizhen and Wu Yibing. Against Zhizhen Popyrin won in straight sets while against Yibing, the Aussie star had to work hard for a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win.
In the main draw of the tournament, Popyrin produced a sensational upset as he defeated world No. 5 Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). This was just the third top-10 win for Popyrin in his career. He served up 11 aces and stayed a step ahead of the Canadian No. 1. Popyrin followed it up with another fine performance against Marcos Giron. After dropping the first set, the big-serving Aussie managed to come back stunningly and win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. In this encounter, Popyrin fired in 16 aces.
In his match against Giron, Popyrin won a mind-boggling point as he hit the winning shot while lying on the court. He celebrated the point rather emphatically and received a huge pop from the crowd in attendance.
