Draw madness – Only active former Australian Open champions to face off in the very first round

Published by

Former champions Victoria Azarenka and Sofia Kenin are set to face off in the very first round (draw) of the Australian Open

The official draw for the Australian Open is out and we have a very interesting first-round fixture in women’s singles. 2013 Champion Victoria Azarenka is set to take on the champion from the 2020 edition, Sofia Kenin. Azarenka is currently ranked World No.26 in WTA women’s singles while Kenin is ranked no.227.

Azarenka and Kenin are incidentally the only two former Australian Open champions in the women’s singles category who are taking part in this edition. None of the other former champions over the last decade are a part of the draw this time around. While defending champion Ashleigh Barty has retired, two-time champion Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the tournament for personal reasons. Meanwhile, Caroline Wozniacki, Serena Williams and Li Na have retired while Angelique Kerber has pulled out because she is pregnant.

“Gauff, Sabalenka or Sakkari better take advantage of this moment. I don’t see Iga winning this…who knows it may be a surprise winner. Be funny if Alicia Parks took the whole thing”, tweeted another fan.
