French Open 2022: 5th seed Rafael Nadal is set to face Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the second round of the Roland Garros

Rafael Nadal stormed into the second round of the French Open after defeating Australia’s Jordan Thompson in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. Nadal made a comeback on the ATP tour earlier this month at the Madrid Open after a two month lay off due to injury.

Rafael Nadal had earlier withdrawn from the Miami Open to manage his workload and keep himself fit for the clay court season. The Spaniard’s plans of preparing for the clay-court season were definitely hampered due to the rib injury. He missed the Monte Carlo Masters, a tournament played on clay surfaces and is considered to be an ideal warm up event leading to the Roland Garros in Paris. However, Nadal is back in time for the Grand Slam in Paris in pursuit of a record 22nd Grand Slam.

Corentin Moutet’s form coming into the tournament

World No. 139 Corentin Moutet caused a major upset in the first round – defeating 2015 French Open champion, Stan Wawrinka in an intense thriller. Moutet came back from a set down to win 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 against the Swiss legend. The local boy certainly had the support of the home crowd in his favour and will once again be his strong weapon against Nadal.

Moutet is not a regular on the ATP professional tour and is generally seen playing the Challenger tours and series. Earlier in the year, he did make it to the main draw of the Australian Open but was eliminated in the second round after losing to Sebastian Korda.

Head to head and Predictions

Nadal and Moutet have never faced each other in the past. This is their first meeting on the ATP tour. On paper, the Spaniard is the outright favourite both in terms of form and rankings but Moutet will certainly have the support of the home crowd to his advantage. We are predicting a comfortable win in three sets for Rafael Nadal.
