Top seed Iga Swiatek is set to take on Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros
Iga Swiatek’s form coming into the match
Iga Swiatek came back from a set down to defeat Qinwen Zheng 6-7, 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the last eight in Paris. The World No.1 has been in sublime touch and has had a dominant run so far in the tournament, extending her streak of unbeaten matches to 32.
Swiatek defeated Lesia Tsurenko 6-2, 6-0 in her first-round match in Paris. She defeated the Ukrainian in just 54 minutes – her fastest win of 2022. In the second round, Swiatek completely decimated America’s Alison Riske 6-0, 6-2 and followed it up with another comprehensive win in straight sets against Danka Kovinic in the third round.
Since a run to the Australian Open semi-finals in January, Swiatek has completely dominated the women’s game and won her past five tournaments – Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, and the Rome Masters. The Polish star is in red hot form and the current World No.1. The top seed certainly looks like the player to beat in this tournament.
Jessica Pegula’s form coming into the match
Jessica Pegula has been very impressive so far at the Roland Garros. She started her campaign with a comfortable victory over Wang Qiang 6-2, 6-4 and followed it up with a hard-earned win against Anhelina Kalinina.
In the third round, Pegula defeated 24th seed Tamara Zidansek 6-1, 7-6 before playing out a thriller in the fourth round against Romania’s Irina Camelia-Begu. The 11th seed from America came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and advance to the quarter finals.
Pegula will certainly face an uphill task against the top seed, Swiatek in the last eight.
