13th seed Gael Monfils fell to Spanish Pedro Martinez in four sets and confirmed his Wimbledon 2021 exit
Gael Monfils is out of the Wimbledon Championships after losing 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) to Pedro Martinez in his debut Grand Slam.
Monfils reacted on Twitter after fans commented saying that he gave up early without putting up a fight in his match. He says:
Monfils, the World No. 16 fired 21 aces and impressed on his service game, but was unable to resist the Spanish debutant. Martinez took control in the first two sets attacking the backhand of the Frenchman. Monfils, however, made a comeback in the third set.
Despite the improvement in his performance, the fourth set went all the way to a tiebreak with Martinez prevailing 7-5 to upset Monfils. The crowds are back with a limited capacity for this year’s tournament.
This is the second consecutive Grand Slam in which the Frenchman has been eliminated in the second round after losing to Mikael Ymer at Roland Garros.
Monfils, 34 is reaching the final stages of his career and has been on the circuit for many years now entertaining crowds with his shot making and fun-filled nature.
Monfils’ fiancé and No. 3 seed Elina Svitolina is also out after a 6-3, 6-4 loss in the second round to Magda Linette of Poland. This is among the high profile upsets in the first week of the tournament.
Svitolina, who is a semi-finalist in 2019 did not look in good form as she lost convincingly to the Pole.
The couple will now head back to the drawing board for the last Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows for the US Open. The pair have set a wedding date for late 2021.
