Garbine Muguruza made light work of Anett Kontaveit to register a 6-3, 7-5 victory over the Estonian star to win the WTA Finals title for the first time in her career and improve her record playing in Mexico at 14 wins and two losses.
In the process Muguruza became the first Spaniard to win the WTA Finals singles title in the event’s history. Former World No.1 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was the only other player from Spain to reach the WTA Finals singles championship match.
However she lost the final to Stefanie Graf in 1993.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza is projected to rise to World No.3 in the upcoming season-ending rankings. After her win the Spaniard said:
“Overall I think it’s the best year for me. I might not have won a Grand Slam, but I deeply feel like I’ve been happier and more stable, less dramatic, and in general very happy about it.”
Muguruza is a former World No.1 who became a dominant force in the tennis circuit. Muguruza turned Pro in 2012 while she was still a teenager.
The Spaniard is a two-time Grand Slam champion winning the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon. She defeated Serena Williams at Roland Garros and Venus Williams at Wimbledon and became the first-ever player to defeat both Williams sisters in Major singles finals.
