Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Alexander Zverev in a five-setter to reach the finals of the French Open
Tsitsipas beat Zverev 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 in a marathon encounter to see off the German, thereby becoming the first Greek player in history to reach a Grand Slam singles final.
After beating Zverev comprehensively in the first two sets, Tsitsipas was pegged back by the resurgent German.
Zverev won the third and fourth sets with identical scores 6-4, 6-4 to make it 2-2 and push the match into the final set.
However, Tsitsipas gained control in the final set after an early break. The Greek picked up the pace from there to win the set and eventually the match, to reach his first-ever Grand Slam final.
Following his victory the Twitterati were very happy for the young Greek making it to his first Grand Slam final.
While some hailed him as the ‘Greek God’, a few fans were pessimistic about his chances of winning the final, since he will be facing either Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions:
Here come the pessimistic lot:
Tsitsipas will be a chuffed man after reaching the finals. However, a mammoth task awaits him on Sunday when he will be taking on either Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic – two of the greatest tennis players of all time.
Youngsters like Tsitsipas have always had a hard time beating Nadal or Djokovic.
Things will get even tougher if he gets to face the clay king, Nadal. The Spaniard has lost just twice in the French Open, whilst winning 105 matches.
