Fabio Fognini was recently seen in action at the ASB Classic tournament – he recently hinted at retirement.

Fabio Fognini’s latest post on social media has given rise to speculations that the Italian tennis star could very well retire at the end of the season. Fognini played in both the singles and doubles categories but got eliminated in the relatively early stages. After being knocked out from doubles yesterday, Fognini shared a post on Instagram which makes fans wonder if this is the beginning of the end for the 35-year-old.

“New Zealand! Unfortunately it’s time to say goodbye…Thanks for the warm welcome and for the great memories over the past 15 years”, Fognini wrote on Instagram. Fans are certainly reading between the lines and the indication is clear that he might not return to play at this event next year. Fognini is 35 now and by the end of the season, he will turn 36. Given his age, it won’t come as a surprise if Fognini eventually decides to draw the curtains after a glorious career spanning close to two decades.

Fans react to the possibility of Fabio Fognini’s retirement

Let us take a look at what fans feel about the possibility of Fognini’s retirement at the end of this season.

“Yeah I saw this too the other day. Makes sense – he’s 35, has been a legitimate player on the tour for over a decade, peaked 7 years ago in 2015, and isn’t exactly known for being in tiptop shape physically. He could change his mind of course, but he doesn’t seem like the type of guy who wants to be grinding unseeded in his late 30s. Awesome player though, always been a fan”, wrote a fan.
