Italian tennis star Fabio Fognini has suggested Rafael Nadal wasn’t injured in yesterday’s epic Wimbledon quarter-final against Taylor Fritz
Fabio Fognini has claimed on social media that Rafael Nadal wasn’t injured during his quarter-final win over Taylor Fritz. Fognini wrote on his Instagram story, “He fought for 4+ hours like crazy. Guys, stop believing in what you read please”, suggesting that Nadal lied about his injury. Nadal battled past Fritz in a fifth-set tiebreak but was urged by his family to retire after calling for the trainer in the second set.
Fognini isn’t convinced about Nadal’s injury and the former world No.9 slammed Nadal on his Instagram story. Responding to a headline after the match, Fognini underlined part that said Nadal had come back from an injury and wrote: “For sure. Guys stop believe in what you read PLEASE!!!.”Despite Fognini’s apparent accusations, Nadal sported brown strapping on the right side of his belly to try and help ease his injury.
Meanwhile, Nadal struggled with an abdominal issue that has been strapped in recent matches and “doesn’t know” if he will be fit to play again on Friday – in the semi-final against Nick Kyrgios. When asked after the five-set thriller if it was possible in time to face the Australian, Nadal said: “I don’t know. I’m going to have some more tests.
Fognini’s comments have raised quite a storm on social media. Let us take a look at some of the reactions on Twitter.
“People fake this kind of injury to justify a lost or a withdrawal, Rafa won the game. You think he played below his standard for fun? Went 5 sets, 4 hours, as a drama, with the title at stake? Come on. Fognini probably a soft lad who couldnt bare to think how to play injured”, wrote a fan, who clearly feels that Fognini is making baseless allegations.
Another fan, who seems to be tired of the unnecessary controversies tweeted – “I wish people would stop trying to trash any of these magnificent tennis players who treat us to so much exciting tennis, be it Rafa, Nole, Andy or even Krygios. Just enjoy the game and give the trashing a rest.”
Another fan on Twitter came up with a wild theory. “Fabio Fognini isn’t buying Nadal’s injury.”NEITHER are WE!Also, NADAL has his OWN DOCTOR for his supposed injuries – he is NOT likely Properly tested for Banned Substances – and he can ‘blame’ any dodgy blood test results… on his ‘legitimate’ drugs!”, he wrote.
