Nick Kyrgios was given a point penalty followed by a game penalty by chair umpire Carlos Bernardes during his Miami Open match against Jannik Sinner. Speaking after the match, Kyrgios lashed out at Bernardes for the decisions he made. “I just don’t think he controls the crowd well at all, in my personal opinion. People can have their opinions on it. I don’t think my point penalty was worth a point penalty“, Kyrgios said in the post-match conference.
The Australian even lashed out at the global governing body, ATP in the post match press conference. Kyrgios said, “The ATP won’t do anything about him. He’s not even going to get a slap on the wrist for his dreadful umpiring performance today. Like he was horrendous. He will just show up in the next event and everyone just forgets how bad that was today from him.”
Kyrgios later took to Twitter to clarify that all his comments were directed towards the chair umpire for the controversial decisions and has nothing to do with Sinner. Kyrgios admitted the Italian was too good on the day and deserved to win.
Kyrgios was recently involved in a controversy after he smashed a racquet on the court which almost hit a ball boy. Kyrgios smashed his racquet out of frustration after his 6-7, 7-5, 4-6 defeat to Nadal at the Indian Wells Masters.
After the customary handshake at the end of the match, Kyrgios smashed the racquet against the ground which bounced off and almost hit a ball boy who ducked in time. Kyrgios was asked about the incident in his post-match interaction and the Australian got offended that everyone was concentrating on an “unintentional event” instead of the amazing tennis match.
Later on Kyrgios apologized to the ball boy and gifted him his racquet.
The Australian feels that the fine was unwarranted and he knows he is a ‘good person‘ and it was an ‘unintentional‘ act.
