Pele breathed his last on Thursday – Chris Evert paid tribute to the deceased soul via an emotional Tweet.
The world is still in shock as arguably the greatest footballer of all time is no more. It is very difficult to come to terms with a world without the Brazilian phenomenon. Pele’s journey from the streets of Bauru in Sao Paulo to become a world-famous icon has served as inspiration for many sportspersons and sports enthusiasts around the world.
At the age of 82, Pele passed away after battling colon cancer for just over a year. Fans flocked to Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital where Pele had been undergoing treatment to mourn the loss of the legend. Social media was flooded with tributes from fans as well as popular celebrities.
Former world No. 1 in women’s tennis, Chris Evert also sent in her tribute to Pele via Twitter. She admitted that Pele was her idol in the 1970s and hailed the great man for being an icon with unmatched athleticism.
“In the 70’s, Pele was my idol. He was an icon, larger than life.He was an ambassador, a humanitarian…I will remember his unmatched athleticism and big smile…RIP”
Rafael Nadal also paid homage to Pele
22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is currently playing in the inaugural United Cup. He played his first game of the new season against Cameron Norrie and lost the match in three sets.
Nadal hailed Pele in a tweet and said he wasn’t lucky enough to watch him play. However, he revealed that when he was young, he was told that Pele was the king of football.
“Today a great world sport is going again. A sad day for the world of football, for the world of sport. His legacy will always remain.
I didn’t see him play, I wasn’t that lucky, but they always taught me and told me that he was the King of football.”
