Former World No.1 Andre Agassi joined Grigor Dimitrov’s coaching side ahead of the 2018 Paris Masters
Bulgarian tennis star Grigor Dimitrov opened up on his relationship with coach Andre Agassi recently during a TV interview.
Dimitrov had joined hands with Agassi back in 2018, however, the latter carries out more of a coaching consultant role
When asked how it felt to have Andre Agassi as a coach during an interview with channel CBS46, Dimitrov replied that words were not enough to express his relationship with the American.
“Sometimes you get to have such good friends that you can’t even explain the relationship, how good it is and there’s not enough words to express that. That’s how I feel with him.
“He’s got a very special place in my heart and he’s a very significant figure. I would say not only my team but, in my life, I’ve always looked up to him when I was a kid and to be able to experience, not only being on the court with him because our biggest development and growth together happen off the court.”
“So, when our walks, a little bit of bite, breakfast, dinner or whatever, going for walks, those were the moments, they stuck in my head.”
However, the coach-player duo is yet to win a major title with his best-ever performance coming at the 2019 US Open, where he reached the semi-finals.
Dimitrov says Agassi helped improve his mental attitude
Dimitrov also revealed that Agassi had helped him with improving his attitude which according to him is a constant issue faced by almost all athletes.
“Sometimes it’s so hard to look yourself from outside you know. You constantly have those voices in the back of your head, any athlete I would say and those are the moments you need to harness those things.
“I mean we’re just like everybody else, just the only problem is when something happens in our off-court lives, unfortunately, it can really affect us on the court.
“So, you know the tennis court is one of the toughest places to show emotions. So, yeah, you know you got to learn how to how to sort of harness those feelings and he certainly have showed me more than a few tricks
“And in moments that I even I didn’t believe in myself enough he kept on hammering the same words and all. You know the bigger picture he really helped on that end,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dimitrov recently entered the semi-finals of the Mexico Open in Acapulco, however, losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.
