Holger Rune is scheduled to play his quarter-final in Munich tomorrow while the qualification rounds in Madrid start a day later on Saturday
Denmark’s star player, Holger Rune has officially announced on social media that he is set to withdraw from the Madrid Open due to a fixture clash with the ongoing tournament in Munich. Rune defeated top seed Alexander Zverev to set up a quarter-final clash against Emil Ruusuvuori, scheduled for tomorrow which means he won’t be able to make it in time for the qualifying phase of Madrid Open which starts on Saturday.
This is a rare scenario where a player has to withdraw due to a fixture clash with the succeeding tournament and has raised questions about ATP’s scheduling and calendar.
Holder Rune meanwhile, played the match of his career yesterday, pulling off a sensational win against top seed and World No. 3 Alexander Zverev. Rune defeated Zverev comprehensively in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The unseeded teenager showed no signs of nervousness playing against a much superior side and the home favourite with the whole crowd in Munich backing Zverev. Rune has now given himself an outside chance to go all the way and clinch the Bavarian International title.
Fans react on Twitter to Holger Rune’s withdrawal due to fixture clash
Holger Rune’s withdrawal has raised questions about ATP’s scheduling and calendar.
“It’s sad to see a player doing well have to miss out on Qualifications for the M1000 event due to tight schedules. Hope u progress to final in Munich and able to make MD in Rome Masters as Madrid being missed out”, wrote a fan.
“I was looking forward to seeing u in live in Madrid, but hope you win in Munich”, tweeted a fan who is gutted that he can’t watch Rune play live in Madrid but conveyed his best wishes.
Another fan supported Rune’s decision and he feels he should focus solely on Munich now. “Wise decision @holgerrune2003, stay focused on the current week in Munich. They are great things to achieve there!!!”, he wrote.
