Fritz speaks of his ambitions after securing a 6-1, 6-1 win against Kamil Majchrzak in the opening round of Indian Wells
Taylor Fritz is the 20th seed at the Indian Wells Masters. He secured a comfortable straight sets victory against Poland’s Majchrzak and is scheduled to face Spain’s Jaume Munar in the next round. The American has had a busy schedule so far, the Indian Wells being his fourth tournament in 2022. Fritz has been impressive this season with the standout performance being a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open where he eventually lost to World No. 5, Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Speaking after his win, Fritz said, “I think just my level as a player has gone up. I feel I have gone up several levels, so yeah I expect a lot more of myself. Six months ago I think I was ranked almost 40 and now I’m between 15 and 20.”
Fritz explained the various aspects of his game he has been working on to improve. “It’s a combination of a lot of different things I’ve been improving for sure. But what’s kind of tying it all together and making the difference is just the forehand“, the American said. He further added, “That’s become so much more of a weapon, I hit so many more winners on it than I used to. It’s just something I really kind of needed in my game. It sets up a lot of points, it wins me a lot of big points. So yeah, just kind of having that clicking has been really important for me.”
Can Taylor Fritz break into the Top 10 of ATP rankings?
Taylor Fritz is currently ranked 16th in the world – his highest ever career ranking. Fritz has made some really quick progress over the past 12 months and one can not rule out his chances of breaking into the Top 10 by the end of this year. Fritz has won one title so far in his senior career – the 2019 Eastbourne International, beating compatriot Sam Querrey in the final. He is currently the no.1 ranked American in the ATP circuit. Fritz certainly has improved his game and it is evident in his recent results. The 24-year has been consistent on the circuit and if he maintains the consistency he definitely will challenge for a top 10 spot.
The wide range of skill set that Fritz has, makes him a very tricky opposition to play against. Fritz possesses a dominant serve that can reach 149 mph and solid ground strokes off both wings. One of Fritz’s defining strengths is his ability to hit sharp angles cross-court shots on both the backhand and forehand sides. He also has a good topspin lob. Recently, Fritz has improved immensely on his forehand shots which has given him an edge over most opponents.
Men’s tennis is going through a transitional phase right now. It’s a matter of time before the likes of Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer hand over the baton to the next generation. Medvedev is next on the line accompanied by a bunch of supremely talented youngsters – Tsitsipas, Alcaraz, Felix, Zverev, Shapovalov, and so on. Taylor Fritz will look to join this crop of youngsters in the top 10 and it is certainly achievable for the talented American.
