In a much-anticipated clash between defending champion Daniil Medvedev and in-form Nick Kyrgios, the Aussie has prevailed and has progressed to the quarter-finals of the US Open.

Nick Kyrgios won the match in a dominant manner and made the World No.1 look like a shell of himself. The Wimbledon finalist won the match in 4 sets by a score of 7-6(13-11), 3-6, 6-3, and 6-2.

This was a very early exit for the 1st seed Daniil Medvedev as he ends the year without a single grand slam title. He was visibly upset after getting outplayed by Kyrgios and wished he could have played better.

Following the loss, Medvedev said, “He played good. It was really even till the 3rd set. I started to feel worse physically. I felt sick today. I get sick at least once a year during the USA swing cause the air conditioning here is just crazy. Last year it was in Cincinnati, this year here”.

Daniil Medvedev added, “It was a high-level match. Nick has a different game, but he played at Novak/Rafa level. (…) he has every shot. If he keeps this level all tournament, he has good chances to win it”.

Nick Kyrgios will now face Karen Khachnov in the quarter-finals of the US Open, while Daniil Medvedev would love to make a strong statement in the ATP Finals later this year.
