Matteo Berrettini had earlier withdrawn from the ongoing Miami Open to undergo this minor operation
Matteo Berrettini underwent right-hand surgery due to which he skipped playing the ATP 1000 event. The Italian has been struggling with a hand injury in the recent past and it has affected his gameplay. The World No. 6 announced on social media that the surgery was successful and he will be back on court very soon.
Berrettini stated on Instagram, “My team and I have been speaking to experts since my withdrawal from Miami with a right hand injury. Following multiple scans and assessments we decided a minor operation was the best solution to ensure a full and quick recovery.”
He further wrote, “Earlier today I had the operation and I am happy to report it went extremely well. My doctor and team are already discussing plans for me to get back on court. I will provide an update as soon the plan is finalized. Thanks very much as always for the support.”
Matteo Berrettini started the season very well with a semi-final appearance at the Australian Open. He lost to eventual champion, Rafael Nadal but gave a good account of himself throughout the tournament. However, since then the results have been pretty underwhelming.
Berrettini entered the following tournament, Rio Open as the No. 1 seed but lost in the quarter-finals to 7th seed Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard went on to win the ATP 500 event. In the Mexican Open at Acapulco, Berrettini had a very disappointing outing. The Italian had to give a walkover in the first round itself against unseeded Tommy Paul. The hand injury did play a crucial role in his withdrawal midway through the encounter.
The Italian did return to action in the next tournament, the Indian Wells Masters. Entering the event as the 6th seed, Berrettini suffered a relatively early exit in the Round of 16 losing to unseeded Miomir Kecmanovic.
Berrettini would take a while to be back in action. He would look to have a full-fledged recovery and be back in time for the second grand slam of the year – the Roland Garros which is just a month away. Berrettini is undoubtedly a very promising player and would aim to live up to expectations once he is back in action after recovery.
