Iga Swiatek has had a dream 2022 so far. The Polish star has now become the World No.1 in women’s singles after winning both the events of the Sunshine Double – the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open 2022. The 20-year old has now become the youngest woman to win the Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same season. Having won in Doha in February, Swiatek became the first player ever to sweep the first three WTA 1000 events in a season.
Swiatek credits her sports psychologist Daria Abramowicz for her supreme consistency in performances on the WTA circuit.Speaking on Abramowicz’s role in her success, Swiatek said, “I’m glad that Daria has convinced me to work on having more variety. I think this really helps in the end. If you don’t have options, you’ve nothing to choose from. So, I’m really happy I could do that.”
Daria Abramowicz credits Swiatek for most of the success on court because at the end of the day, it’s the player who has to implement all the plans on the court. Abramowicz is clear about her role as an enabler for Swiatek. Her job is to ensure that Swiatek is in the best frame of mind during a tournament and has complete focus on the game.
“At the end of the day, my role is to help her create, build and sustain routines and also modify and manage them in many different environments. Because that’s how the tour works, with the intensity of travel, changing time zones, changing places, changing venues, even the positions you’re in throughout the year”, explained Abramowicz.“
She further added, “What we did across the last few weeks was to develop this mindset that allows you to accept that there is no streak that goes indefinitely. It’s ok to under perform because that’s life, that’s sport, that’s the beauty of it, that’s the reality.”
