Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert are two legends of women’s tennis and they continue to encourage each other in various ventures post their professional careers
Martina Navratilova took to Twitter to express her excitement about Chris Evert’s new tennis bracelet collection. Evert launched her bracelet line in collaboration with well-known jewellery designer Monica Rich Kosann. Navratilova promoted her arch-rival and great friend’s new endeavor as she received her very own jewellery piece, inspired by the tennis court.
“I am so excited to have this fabulous bracelet from the Tennis Bracelet – CE collection , about time Chris has the chance to tell her story about the tennis bracelet- this one with a great clasp“, wrote Navratilova, revealing her own piece of jewellery. The bracelet has an iconic back story that dates back to the playing days of Evert and Navratilova.
Chris Evert famously lost her diamond line bracelet while competing in one of her initial encounters at the 1978 US Open. Play was halted until the American legend was able to find her delicate ornament. She eventually managed to get her hands on the iconic bracelet, thus inspiring the iconic name “tennis bracelet”.
Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert shared an intense rivalry back in their playing days
Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova are considered to be two of the greatest tennis players of all time. Back in the 1970s and 80s, they shared one of the greatest rivalries in tennis history and sports in general. Both players contested 80 matches between 1973 and 1988 with Navratilova leading the overall head-to-head 43–37. Both are former World number 1s in women’s tennis.
Evert and Navratilova collectively held the No. 1 ranking for 592 weeks, Navratilova at 332 weeks and Evert at 260 weeks. Such was their dominance over other players, that for the entire period of ten years (1977-1987) the two rivals were ranked No.1 & No.2, exchanging the top spot often but no other player could even challenge them.
