Caroline Wozniacki is all set to make a comeback to professional Tennis at the age of 33. The mother of two had retired from the sport back in 2020 but she has decided to come out of retirement later this year. She is expected to return to the sport during the North American hard-court season in Montreal, before making a Grand Slam comeback at the US Open.
Wozniacki revealed her decision during an exclusive interaction with Vogue magazine. The 2018 Australian Open Champion is confident that she has what it takes to take on the best of women’s Tennis. She cited the examples of Williams, Azarenka and Kim Clijsters, who all returned to the sport as mothers and reached major finals.
She made some strong statements during the interview and made her intentions clear. “If I didn’t believe in myself, I wouldn’t be doing this: I’m too competitive to just show up and not feel like I’m going to be one of the best players out there”, said the former World No.1. Wozniacki particularly wants to prove to herself and other women that they can have a family while achieving professional success at the same time.
Caroline Wozniacki played her last match on the WTA tour in 2020. She lost in the third round of the competition to Ons Jabeur. However, she had an illustrious career spanning over 15 years before that from 2015-2020.
Wozniacki’s greatest triumph came in 2018 when she won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. In an emotional final, she defeated Simona Halep to claim the championship. This victory solidified her status as one of the top players in the world.
During her stellar career, Wozniacki won a total of 30 WTA singles titles, including four in 2017 alone. She also reached two more Grand Slam finals, at the US Open in 2009 and 2014, but fell short of capturing the titles. Wozniacki had notable success on all surfaces, with her defensive style proving effective on both hard courts and clay.
In 2019, at the age of 29, Wozniacki announced that she would retire from professional tennis after the Australian Open in 2020. She bid farewell to the sport after a successful career that spanned over a decade. However, as fate would have it, she is now all set for a grand comeback!
