World No.1 Iga Swiatek suffered an early exit from the Wimbledon after losing in the third round to Alize Cornet
Iga Swiatek‘s 37-match winning streak ended as France’s Alize Cornet caused one of the biggest upsets so far at Wimbledon. The 21-year-old top seed was beaten 6-4 6-2 in an inspired performance by 37th-ranked Cornet. Swiatek took to Twitter to thank her fans for the support throughout the season and made it clear that it is now time to prepare for the remainder of the season.
“And that’s a wrap – grass season is over for me and in some way, one ig the most intense, challenging and exciting times in my career is over as well. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and that you will stay with me even without streaks and records. I learned a lot and I can’t wait to work even harder to be a better player and better athlete. But now? It’s time to reset and recharge”, Swiatek tweeted.
Iga Swiatek has been the most dominant player on the WTA Tour this year, having won her sixth tournament in a row at the recent French Open. Her previous defeat came back in February when she lost to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai. Since a run to the Australian Open semi-finals in January, Swiatek completely dominated the women’s game and won six consecutive tournaments – Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, Rome Masters, and the Roland Garros.
Speaking after the match, a disappointed Swiatek admitted – “I know I didn’t play good tennis. I was pretty confused about my tactics.”
The Polish ace did not play a tournament on grass before going to Wimbledon. She cited the reason to be a shoulder injury as she pulled out of Berlin. Taking a break to recover mentally from her exploits at Roland Garros was important to Swiatek, but her lack of confidence on the grass showed in a performance that lacked fluidity.
