If we ever have a fifth Grand Slam in a calendar year – who would be the perfect choice as hosts?
Are four Grand Slams a year too less? Tennis fans wait eagerly for each Grand Slam every year and the Slams are the biggest platforms in world Tennis, without a shade of doubt. However, fans seem to want more and there have often been speculations about having a fifth Grand Slam. Have you ever wondered if we were to actually add another Grand Slam in a calendar year, who would be the perfect hosts?
Well, considering a hypothetical situation where the concerned authorities do give a green signal for a fifth Grand Slam, there would be many contenders for hosting rights. At the moment, the four Grand Slams are spread only over three continents: Australian Open (Oceania), French Open (Europe), Wimbledon (Europe) and US Open (North America). That makes a really strong case for a South American or an Asian country to host an additional Grand Slam, which would undoubtedly expand the reach and popularity of the sport.
Let us take a look at what fans feel about the prospect of having an additional Grand Slam.
“Tokyo would be a good idea, they could expand on their existing infrastructure from the Olympics and a slam in a non-western country would be good for the sport. I think it would be quite difficult to pull off a new grand slam given the history of the sport, but a Masters there at least would be pretty good”, wrote a fan.
“Logistics might be difficult but I think it would be cool to have a “South American Slam” that is in a different country every year. It could rotate between Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, etc”, commented another fan.
“I’m so reassured by the fact that nobody is choosing Italy because we all know (us Italians more than others) that it would be an organizational disaster”, trolled another fan.
“Somewhere in Asia, or at least outside of the Western world. Japan and China would probably be the main candidates. Maybe Argentina as well, they seem to like tennis and is once again somewhere completely different”, read a comment.
Another fan wrote: “We have 2 in Europe, 1 in Oceania, and 1 in North America. So I would prefer to aim for South America, Africa, or Asia. Out of the three I think Asia would be best, as they have demonstrated they can hold a Masters before.”
