Andy Murray defeated James Duckworth 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of Wimbledon 2022
Andy Murray maintained his record of never losing in the first round at Wimbledon with an encouraging win over Australia’s James Duckworth. The former world number one, now ranked 52nd, came back strong from a set down to register an impressive win on the center court. The 35-year-old Scot will now face big-serving American John Isner, seeded 20th, in the second round on Wednesday.
Speaking after the match, Murray said – “It is amazing to be back out here again with a full crowd,” said Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion.I’m getting on a bit now so I don’t know how many opportunities I will get here.I’m pleased I managed to get through and hopefully I will get another match here on Centre in a couple of days.”
Murray has recovered in time from the abdominal injury which had prevented him from playing at the Queen’s Club Championships last week. “The ab felt absolutely fine today,” said Murray, who had another scan this week which showed that the injury had healed.
Murray kicked off his grass-court season at the Surbiton Trophy, a Challenger event. He reached the semi-finals of the event, displaying some good form. After straight-set wins over Jurij Rodionov, Gijs Brouwer, and Brandon Nakashima, he lost to Denis Kudla in three sets in the semifinals.
He carried forward the positive momentum to his next event – the Stuttgart Open. The 35-year-old reached the final, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the process. However, he eventually lost to the second seed Matteo Berrettini.
A string of good results is his previous two grass-court events and a comprehensive win to start the Wimbledon are certainly positive signs for Andy Murray.
